Best Speech Therapy Activity for Children

INTRODUCTION
This study aims at monitoring the development of speech and language of two children who have hearing loss – one of which is a user of the bilateral auditory prosthesis and the other has unilateral cochlear implant and auditory prosthesis.

That is the peak of the process of maturation of the central auditory system and neural plasticity occurs in the auditory pathway.

In this lesson we discuss speech therapy activity for hearing loss, adults, What you can expect from Speech Therapy.

The Best Speech Therapy Activities for children:

Use simple sounds:- We use a simple param of language sounds like “pa”, “ma”,”la”, “Ja”, ”ch”, “aa”, “oo”, etc. to babies even when they are newborn.

Speak slowly so baby can understand:-Try to use simple words and friendly tones. Your children can understand what you are saying if you talk to her face to face.

TV does NOT help to get children to talk:- Don’t turn on the TV as soon as you get home or have it on constantly when your toddler is in the room. Contrary to what you may think the TV is not considered part of speech therapy activities.

Play with your child:- Playing is a good way to communicate with your child and also build motor skills and many other benefits.

Tell your baby what you are doing:- When you are feeding, bathing or changing your child, keep talking about what you are doing. If you are going out, talk about where you are going with him/her in simple language.

Read books:- Reading a book with lots of colorful pictures and words is one of the best speech therapy activities.

Singing and rhyming:- When your children singing songs and nursery rhyme with your child. It is a vital part of your speech therapy activities.
Introduce new words:- Add to words your child already says like “doll,” if he/she says doll you say “big toy,” or “nice toy ”.

Teach them to ask for things:- When giving your child something to eat, name it, say “how about an papaya? We have red papaya.

Teach “thank you” and “please” early:- Children learn from parents to be polite.
Speech Therapy for adults:- Adults may experience speech and language difficulties for a variety of reasons.

There is the number of reason speech difficulties occur in adults:

Mental health issues
Learning disorders
Physical disabilities
Aphasia
Hearing impairment
Dysarthria
Stuttering
Traumatic Brain Injury
Throat, neck or throat cancer
Socializing problems followed by auditory disorder
Conditions like stroke or dementia

What you can expect from Speech Therapy:- Being a parent is one of the hardest jobs in the world. You love this child in ways you never could have imagined and you will do all you can to help them grow.

Conclusion:-
We know this session, Use simple sounds, Speak slowly so baby can understand, TV does NOT help to get children to talk, Play with your child, Tell your baby what you are doing, Read books

Let’s Understand What Is Hearing Loss

In this world all the living and nonliving things have a sound some sounds are so soft, some are chirpy, some are loud and some are so irritating but without an experience of hearing sound we can’t judge that and that is a beautiful part of anyone living to experience that.

What is Hearing Loss and Hearing Impairment?

Hearing Loss” that is also known as Hearing Impairment, is a problem in which a person has the inability of hearing. Dealing with any health problem can be easy if the reason for that health problem is understood at the beginning of that problem.

[

]

There are many types of health problem, “Hearing Loss” is a measurement problem that can happen at any age of person due to some basic or measure causes. It can occur in one or both ears. It can occur in children or an adult, in children it can also become the problem of speaking or in an adult it can become a problem of many difficulties. Some time hearing loss happens due to loneliness. It may be temporary or permanent. Hearing loss can affect a person’s life and an emotional state so unfortunately that person also suffers from the depression, anxiety, social isolation and some other health condition.

Hearing loss may be caused by a number of factors, genetics, aging, exposure to noise, some infections, birth complications, trauma to the ear, and certain medications or toxins. An ear infection can also be causes of hearing loss. Some infections during pregnancy such as syphilis and rubella may also cause hearing loss in the child. First, we have to know about the symptoms of hearing loss after that we can understand that is there any problem in hearing loss or not.

Symptoms of hearing loss

  • The symptoms of hearing loss can vary depending on the type of hearing loss, the cause of hearing loss, and the degree of loss.In general, people who have hearing loss may experience any or all of the following:
  • Difficulty understanding everyday conversation
  • A feeling of being able to hear but not understand
  • Having to turn up the TV or radio
  • Asking others to repeat often
  • Avoidance of social situations that were once enjoyable
  • Increased difficulty communicating in noisy situations like restaurants, lively family gatherings, in the car or in group meetings
  • Tinnitus, or ringing and/or buzzing sounds in the ears
  • Hearing loss may cause by affecting by the different parts of the ear that can be the reason for the hearing loss. In the inner part of the ear, there are different parts that can be the reason for hearing loss. Hearing loss has different type according to the affected parts of the ear without understanding that we can’t cure that so causes as well as types of hearing loss is also necessary to know to use the right hearing aids.

Types of Hearing Loss

  • The sensorineural hearing loss is a type of hearing loss. It is helping due to damage of tiny hair-like call in the inner or in the auditory nerve. The auditory nerve carries important information about the loudness, pitch, and meaning of sounds to the brain. Most adults with hearing loss have a sensorineural loss. Sensorineural hearing loss can often result in difficulty understanding sound or speech even though it is loud enough to hear.
  • The conductive hearing loss is caused by a mechanical problem in the outer or middle ear or an obstruction in the ear canal such as ear wax that blocks sound from getting to the eardrum. It can be permanent but more often, it is temporary and can be medically treated.
  • Mixed hearing loss results when there are components of both sensorineural and conductive hearing loss present.

Causes of Hearing Loss

  • Aging- It is the most common cause of hearing loss. One out of three people age 65-74 has some level of hearing loss.Due to high blood pressure, diabetes or the use of certain medications harmful to the ear can increase the risk of deafness in elderly people.
  • Noise- It is also a common cause of hearing loss it happens due to loud of the sound. That can be possibly come from our work, noisy motors or loud music in discos, pub, and nightclub. Noise wears slow down the hearing and that can become measure problem if it is loud or continues. Many people are not aware of it and that becomes a problem of hearing.
  • Genetics- Hearing loss can be inherited. it can be a reason for hearing loss. There are two forms of genetic hearing loss, syndromic and nonsyndromic. Syndromic occur when there are other signs or medical problem in a person. And Nonsyndromic occur when there are no other signs or medical problem identified in a person is other than deafness.
  • Medication- Medications can cause hearing loss. There is some drug due to that causes of hearing loss. These medications are also considered in ototoxic. The link between NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and hearing loss tends to be greater in the women. After taking these medicine hearing processes become slower and after some time a person becomes deaf.

When hearing tester find that a person is unable to here at least 25 decibels in one ear then the hearing loss is diagnosed.Hearing loss can be categorized as mild, moderate, moderate-severe, severe, or profound. There are three main types of hearing loss, conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss, and mixed hearing loss.

Some of the hearing loss is curable. That can be only done by immunization, proper care around pregnancy, avoiding loud noise, and avoiding certain medications. Useful. Lip reading is also a useful skill that helps in it. Hearing aids can also use to make some good help in it that is also available easily on many sites.

Types Of Tinnitus

Tinnitus can vary a lot between individuals, therefore you can find many different types of tinnitus. Some important types discuss as follows.

  1. Subjective Tinnitus
  2. Neurological Tinnitus
  3. Objective Tinnitus
  4. Somatic Tinnitus

1. Subjective Tinnitus

It is the most common form of tinnitus. This type of tinnitus can appear and disappear suddenly and may last 3–12 months at a time. In some severe cases, it may never stop. It is often caused by exposure to loud noise. Subjective tinnitus is usually treated with hearing aids that play a calming noise, distracting you from the ringing, buzzing or other sounds that are experienced with this type of tinnitus.

2. Neurological Tinnitus

This type of Tinnitus usually caused by a disorder, such as Meniere’s disease, that primarily affects the brain’s auditory functions.

3. Objective Tinnitus

Objective tinnitus is heard not only by the person experiencing it, but it can also be detected by someone else. It is commonly heard as a regular pulsing noise, in rhythm with the person’s blood flow or pulse near the ear tissue.

4. Somatic Tinnitus

It is a type of tinnitus that is typically related to physical movement and touch. It can be generated by muscle spasms in the ear or neck, and by other mechanical sources. There are two types of Dental problems such as impacted wisdom teeth and popping of the jaw can also create this type of tinnitus.

Symptoms Of Tinnitus

There are many types of Symptoms of Tinnitus but most common symptoms of tinnitus as listed below-

  • Ringing
  • Roaring
  • Clicking
  • Hissing
  • Buzzing

Above these types of symptoms, you can easily find in 1 to 5 people. The volume of the sound can fluctuate. It is often most noticeable at night or during periods of quiet. There may be some Hearing Loss.

The Treatment Of Tinnitus

Around 7% population is suffering from Tinnitus in India. We understand how difficult it is when we heard continuous sound in the ear without presenting any sound in the environment, that highly interfere our daily lifestyle. So the treatment of tinnitus is very important for our life. Some of the selected treatments for Tinnitus as listed below-

1. Hearing Aids

Sometimes the people are suffering from the tinnitus in Hearing Loss then wearing hearing aid also provides a relief.

2. Cochlear implants

It is a Device that is used for severe hearing loss. It is different from the Hearing Aids. Cochlear implants help the people with the tinnitus-related hearing loss that is significant. However, this type of surgery is not performed for tinnitus alone and is used only for hearing problems.

3. Tinnitus Retraining Therapy

It is also called as TRT Treatment. It’s a therapy process that helps people who are suffering from tinnitus. Tinnitus Retraining Therapy reflects the practical implementation of the neurophysiological model of tinnitus. If the People can also take tinnitus masking, but TRT  may be a more effective treatment than tinnitus masking.  The two main components of these are educational counseling and sound therapy.

4. Dental Treatment

The high-pitched noise of dental drills is the most prominent way tinnitus can be caused or worsened. At the time, when the dentist is drilling in teeth, the sound is transmitted by bone conduction directly into the inner ear. It sounds much louder than it normally would because bone conduction has essentially no loss of intensity over short distances.

5. Tinnitus Maskers

With the help of this technique, there are lots of people have also benefited from tinnitus maskers. The tinnitus Masker is an electronic hearing aid device that generates pleasant than the internal noise produced by the tinnitus. Tinnitus Markers is basically designed to mask the presence of tinnitus.

6. Alternative medicine

There are some people try herbal preparations such as ginkgo biloba or minerals such as zinc or magnesium with varying results. There are many home remedies that are used to suppress loud roaring noises, echoing, dull humming and other tinnitus symptoms.

Best Digital Hearing Aids To Improve Your Hearing

Hearing machines are helpful for speech understanding for a person with hearing loss.

Different Styles of Hearing Aids

InIn-the-Canal and completely-in-the-Canal  Aids:-These aids are contained in a tiny case that fits partly or completely into the ear canal.

Behind-the-Ear Aids:-This style is often chosen for young children for safety and growth reasons

Behind-the-Ear Aid Open Fitting:-Inside the ear canal, a small, soft silicone dome or a molded, highly vented acrylic tip holds the tube in place.

What are the benefits of hearing aids?

Hearing aids help the communication and clear listening.

Top five benefits of hearing aids:

  • Increased Earning Power
  • Slow Cognitive Decline
  • Reduce Annoyance Related to Tinnitus
  • Hearing Aid Wearers Are Satisfied With Hearing Aid Performance
  • Better Living

How do hearing aids work?

Hearing aids are small electronic devices that work by reducing hearing loss problem.

Here is how a hearing aid works step-by-step:

These are step-by-step representation by Oticon describing how this machine works:

How our ears hear sound energy:- Things make sounds when they vibrate (move back and forth), setting air in motion around them.

How we can lose our hearing:-The path between your outer ear and your brain can be blocked or damaged in many different places and in a number of different ways, so people can become deaf or lose some or all of their hearing for lots of different reasons.

Digital hearing aids:- They use a combination of different techniques very broadly referred to as DSP (digital signal processing)

  • Gain adjustment:-Gain adjustment:- the concept of self-adjustment of the gain-frequency response was tested by 24 hearing aid users using four different controllers with a limited number of control functions.Gain adjustment:- the concept of self-adjustment of the gain-frequency response was tested by 24 hearing aid users using four different controllers with a limited number of control functions. The subjects were able to provide systematic and reproducible feedback with respect to their preferences in different acoustic conditions presented audiovisually, achieving an average short-term test/retest standard deviation value of 2.8 dB.
  • Compression:-The concept of compression hasn’t changed much in the last many years, but the focus on understanding compression has shifted in a significant way.We can look at compression from three different aspects, similar to how we look at sound. The frequency aspect relates to the number of channels in the compression; the bandwidth of the system. Intensity refers to which gain parameter we adjust; the gain parameter of the soft sounds, loud sounds, and so forth.
  • Sound classification:-Hearing aid users are typically exposed to a variety of listening situations, such as speech, music and noisy environments.Choosing appropriate features is a domain-specific question. In the past years many pattern-recognition techniques have been proposed and used in various fields. The evaluation of the investigated features and classifiers is performed on a database composed of sounds from five classes.
  • Speech enhancement:- In recent decades, the hearing problems among people around the world have increased. It is a fact that people with hearing deficiency struggle to recognize necessary content from the original speech with noise due to interfering sounds, background noise, and echo sounds.Even though multi-microphone has certain drawbacks, it has a better result than the single-microphone methods. But in modern hearing aids, the speech perception in noisy environments is very difficult.
  • Feedback reduction:-Acoustic feedback poses a major problem to hearing aid users. Because of the acoustic coupling feedback between the hearing aid receiver and the microphones, a closed-loop system is formed. The feedback reduction evaluation was performed in a soundproof booth with a background noise level of 20 dBA. The evaluation is based on physical measures for quantifying the amount of feedback, oscillations, and distortion.
  • Noise reduction:-Noise reduction:-The most biggest effect of noise for people with hearing loss, is its impact on their ability to understand conversation. Its biggest impact is the daily interference with their ability to communicate every time they talk to somebody in a noisy situation.Noise reduction systems are most definitely not all alike, the different manufacturer’s features vary in effectiveness and the amount of gain reduction applied, even at the same sound frequencies. it may help to explain why many people wearing such systems report an improvement in their ability to understand speech.
